Vedanta, Buddhism, Deepak Chopra, and the New Atheist Critique: Why the New Atheists Are Wrong
We are excited to announce that as part of the Qwykr Talk Series, we will be having a Prelego (trans. : “Talk”) by Dr. Sanjiv Chopra. We are also thrilled to announce that Mr. Anand Manikutty will be presenting a Talk on:
“Vedanta, Buddhism, Deepak Chopra, and the New Atheist critique: why the New Atheists are Wrong”
Earlier, one of us had recommended the book Surrounded by Idiots to Prof. Bhaskaran Raman (Professor, IIT Mumbai). Its Red/Yellow/Green/Blue personality framework gives us an interesting lens:
- Dr. Deepak Chopra seems like a relatively easygoing, phlegmatic personality. He is definitely not a “Red”.
- Many of his critics, however, are not. They’ve attacked him again and again, not realizing that he simply doesn’t respond in kind. They are “Reds”.
- Some interpret that silence as “the critics winning” — but Mr. Manikutty argues that Chopra, who draws deeply from Vedanta, has been consistent all along. And, per his interpretation of the science, he is, in fact, right in some ways.

This matters because not everything Christopher Hitchens said in God is Not Great holds up when applied to Vedanta:
- When teachings about, say, Krishna are treated as metaphor, Vedanta is not a religion in the dogmatic sense.
- They are closer to philosophy, and deserve to be understood as such.
- Buddhism, under certain interpretations, is similarly not dogmatic.
And here’s the really exciting part:
We’re hosting Dr. Sanjiv Chopra (Deepak Chopra’s brother) in the Qwykr Talk Series!
So not only do we get the honor of interviewing him, but we also get to share our own reflections on this fascinating subject.
Stay tuned — this is going to be an important Talk about spirituality, criticism, and how philosophies like Vedanta and ideas from Buddhism are often misunderstood in today’s debates.
